Autodesk DWG TrueView is a Windows program that opens and converts DWG files.

CAD stands for computer-aided design, and DWG—from drawing—is a file format used to store CAD objects. The file format is suitable to 2D and 3D and stores metadata in addition to design data. The DWG file format is the native format for many of the most widely used CAD suites. It is supported by almost all CAD-oriented programs and often the format of choice to share CAD data.

Autodesk DWG TrueView is official freeware that gives you the capability to open and view these DWG files. The program is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions when applicable. It has been updated to support Windows 10, and the program is supported at least as far back as Windows XP.

In addition to DWG, Autodesk DWG TrueView supports the DWF and DXF file formats. DWF and DXF are extensions of DWG that are designed for specific purposes. DWF is the Drawing Web Format and often used to exchange CAD data online. DXF is the Drawing Exchange Format and is used to export CAD data for use in programs that may not use DWG directly. Autodesk DWG TrueView supports both 2D and 3D files, and this applies to DWG, DWF and DXF.

Autodesk DWG TrueView is more than just a viewer. It is also a converter, and you can convert between DWG and DWF and DXF in any direction as well as convert into particular DWG versions where supported. It is also possible to mark up DWG files from within Autodesk DWG TrueView when you add Design Review to it. Design Review is also official freeware.

Autodesk makes three solutions available that are all similar but have distinct elements. These are Autodesk Viewer, DWG TrueView and Design Review. Autodesk Viewer is an online solution that is perhaps just simpler to use for the average person who needs to open DWG files. Autodesk Viewer also lets you share DWG versions but does not support converting them as DWG TrueView does. Design Review supports marking up DWG files but not converting or sharing them. Note that DWG TrueView and Design Review can be installed together and then work together.
